Tanning Myths.. answered!

In the December 2009 edition of Cosmopolitan, they talked about various tanning myths.. and debunked them to set the record straight!  Just in case you missed this great article, here it is – with some insights from yours truly as well!  🙂

  1. Indoor tanning is not strongly linked to melanoma. The Indoor Tanning Association insists that no proof connects artificial UV light to melanoma – the deadliest form of skin cancer that is also the second most common cancer for women in their 20s and the third most common cancer for women in their 30s – and that rates of skin cancer today are probably based on having been sunburned 20 to 4o years ago.  Since the 80’s, the rates of indoor tanning have increased by 27% – while melanoma cases have increased 50%.  **Boys and girls, I think that’s significant numbers.  PLEASE be careful if you plan on tanning!
  2. Indoor tanning is an excellent source of hard-to-get vitamin D. Actually, there’s no proof in that.  No meter on the tanning device actually monitors the level of vitamin D your body produces.  **So don’t be on it being a good way to get your daily intake.  Instead – all you’ll need to do is head outdoors (with or without sunscreen) for 10 minutes per day – 3 times a week – to satisfy your vitamin D needs.  And heck, you can do that getting in and out of your car!
  3. A base tan will protect you from sun damage when you go outside. While its true it does give you some protection from burning, its only true because the tan itself is already the damage done to your skin.  Any more sun on top of that will just cause more damage.  Also, keep in mind that not every skin tone can actually tan.  Some people are just born to burn.  😦
  4. Tanning beds are safer than the sun, since you control the UV level. Although you can control the time on tanning beds, thus maintaining the amount of UV exposure you’ll receive, often times those bulbs used in tanning booths are two to three more times intense than actual sun exposure – therefore your 10 minutes in the tanning bed can equal up to 30 minutes in real sunlight.  So word to the wise, even if you know the bulbs are checked and rechecked to maintain accuracy, the best bet is to just steer clear.

There you have it boys and girls – some tanning myths, busted.  I know that some of you will still want to get out there and soak up the rays (indoors or out), so PLEASE wear sunscreen.  Trust me, you’ll still get some color to your skin – but perhaps not nearly as much damage.  Also, be sure to check your sunscreen for UVA and UVB protection – and that you read the instructions.  Not all waterproof sunscreens are waterproof all day.

    Amen sistah! I know – I was a “tanner” back in the day. Now I have some lovely scars to show for where I had skin cancer removed. ALWAYS WEAR SUNSCREEN!! Self-tanning products have come a long way, too. No more orangey skin!!
